Criterion #23
Integration of Faith and Learning |
Spiritual emphasis is appropriately incorporated and
intentionally integrated into instruction and activities other than Bible classes. |
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for Score: The integration of faith and learning is seemlessly practiced in every classroom at APCS. Subject
matter is approached through the lens of the Bible, whether in science where natural laws and creatures are studied as objects of creation by a skilled Mastor Creator, in social studies where human relationships and social institutions are viewed in relation to the community of God, in art and music where appreciation for beauty is encouraged, or in PE where the body is viewed as the temple of God. As Adventist teachers, we believe that the purpose of true is to prepare our students for service to God and man. As stated by Ellen White, "True education means more than the pursual of a certain course of study. It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being, and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental, and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come" (Education, p.130). Therefore, spiritual emphasis is an integral part of all instruction.

Criterion #24
Teachers Use Assessments to Drive Instruction |
Teachers use formal assessments, both formative and
summative, to drive instruction. |
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for Score: APCS teachers use a variety of formative assessments such as questioning techniques, observations, self and peer assessments, portfolios, and daily work to evaluate student performance and to drive instruction on a daily basis. They also use summative assessments such as the ITBS, DIBLELs, the Metropolitan, Brigance, Wide-range Abilities, and the BRI as well as unit and chapter tests and quizzes to measure the students' achievement and to place students in the most effective learning groups for their individual needs.
Action Plan: We would like to continue to grow in this area by using PBSE (Performance-Based Supervision and Evaluation) for teacher supervision. This method of supervision involves each teacher in evaluating data to target areas of student weakness and to determine the best methods and strategies to improve instruction and thereby increase student achievement. We are also taking steps toward using the NAD REACH program to assist special needs students as part of the Journey to Excellence.

Criterion #25
Research-based Instruction |
90% or more of the teachers have developed and effectively
implemented two or more research-based instructional strategies which honor the Natural Cycle of Learning. |
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for Score: Our teachers at APCS are all 4MAT trained and use 4MAT lessons in their curriculum. They also
implement cooperative strategies and experiential learning opportunities to increase student involvement and encourage participation. These methods honor the Natural Cycle of Learning and result in academic success.
Action Plan: We will continue to keep current on research-based instructional strategies and to implement proven strategies in our classrooms.

Criterion #26
Standards-driven Instruction |
Standards are used to plan instruction, and differentiated instruction, leading to mastery learning, is used for all students.
|
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for Score: All APCS teachers have created syllabuses for their classes. These documents list the standards that are covered in each unit for each core subject area. Students are grouped/leveled by ability within the classroom, and adjustments are made in assignments and instructional techniques when necessary to meet individual students' needs. We also offer individualized instruction through the Hope Learning Center for students who need more assistance.

Criterion #27
Vertical Alignment |
Core curricula has vertical alignment to develop skills with K-8 and/or 9-12 to prepare students to be workforce ready.
|
APCS Score=2
Progressing |
Reason for Score: Our teachers have carefully created course syllabuses to ensure that they are meeting the
standards for their grade levels. Instruction is standards driven, which creates natural vertical alignment. However, we need to work toward better communication and teamwork between grade levels.
Action Plan: We are growing in this area and plan to work together as a staff to implement curriculum mapping which will generate more dialog and teamwork between grade levels. Curriculum mapping will be used to identify gaps in curriculum and to eliminate redundancy.

Criterion #28
Technology Plan |
Technology is seamlessly integrated into instruction.
|
The school has a written master technology plan that includes the following:Maintaining current technology; internet access for
students and teachers; internet safety software; technology is seamlessly integrated and utilized in the instruction on a daily basis; proper licensing of all software; internet access and use policies; appoint IT person; future plans. |
APCS Score=2
Progressing |
Reason for Score: We have a 14 computer technology lab that was updated with new computers in July 2012. The old lab computers, which were still in good working order, were relocated to classrooms and offices to replace outdated equipment. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the building, and all student computers are equipped with safety software. The school's Acceptible Use Policy is posted on the school website. APCS has a contract with ETS Networks, Inc. We are currently working on staff inservices on technology integration.
Action Plan: Continue staff development on technology integration to encourage the seemless use of technology in instruction on a daily basis.
Timeline: Ongoing
Estimated Cost: $300/month + hardware and software costs as needed. (The recent lab upgrades were $10,000, which was raised through the development office by a matching-fund grant of $3500, matching donations, and through the Annual Fund.
