Criterion #1
School Sign |
The school sign is attractive and clearly identifies the school as Seventh-day Adventist.
|
APCS
Score=2 Progressing |
Reason for score: Our current school sign is very simple and does not clearly identify the school as Seventh-day
Adventist. However, we have already worked with a local sign company to design our new sign. We will sign the contract as soon as our application is accepted.
Action Plan: Using part of our recent grant of $5,500, we will purchase a new sign that is attractive and clearly identifies the school as SDA. It will also include the EDGE logo. We will also landscape around the sign to make our entrance more inviting.
Time Line: Upon acceptance of our EDGE application
Estimated Cost: $3500

Criterion #2
Friendliness Exhibited and Spiritual Stories Shared |
Friendliness is consistently exhibited by school personnel, pastors, and school board members when working for the students.
Personal spiritual stories and experiences are shared with students often. |
Friendliness is consistently exhibited by school
personnel, pastors, and school board members when working for the students. There is intentional focus on sharing personal spiritual stories with students. |
APCS
Score=2 Progressing |
Reason for score: Friendliness is usually exhibited by school personnel, pastors, and school board members when
working for the students. Personal spiritual stories are usually shared with students. The principal or another staff member greets each student by name as they arrive at school in the morning. The principal also calls rides in the
afternoon, giving him another opportunity to exchange greetings with students and parents as they leave for the day. Teachers greet students as they arrive in the classrooms in the morning.
Action Plan: We want to work on becoming more inviting and friendly and to become more intentional about sharing our personal stories of faith with our students. To do this we are going to request that our board members share their stories during assemblies and that our teachers plan to share their personal testimonies with their class during morning worship.
Time Line: Initiate intentionality during 2012-2013 school year
Estimated Cost: $0

Criterion #3
Consistent, Weekly Spiritual Activities |
There are consistent weekly spiritual activities that include: Administrator/teachers, Pastors/other church members, Student-led activities, board members/ parents.
|
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for score: Every week the local pastors present worship talks in each classroom during Wednesday morning worships; every Friday we have school-wide assemblies that are presented by a variety of guests ranging from pastors and parents to local organizations and friends of APCS. Once a month, our student body participates in a Kids in Discipleship Family Group worship. During this time, our students are divided into family groups including students from all classrooms, and our 7th and 8th graders lead in family group worship using the K.I.D. curriculum. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays the teachers have worship with their classes in their classrooms.
Action Plan: We plan to continue these activities and to include an even greater variety of speakers, including more of our board members.
Estimated Cost: $0

Criterion #4
SDA Fundamental Beliefs are Intentionally Taught |
There is an intentional plan to: Teach the Fundamental
Beliefs of the SDA Church, lead the students to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and ensure that students know most of the Fundamental Beliefs of the SDA Church. |
APCS Score=3
Ideal |
Reason for Score: Our teachers integrate faith and learning throughout the curriculum on a daily basis. The SDA
fundamental beliefs are taught through our Bible curriculum. Our entire student body is involved in our K.I.D. family groups where they are intentionally led to have a personal walk with Jesus and to become disciples for Him. The school also promotes the K.I.D. ministry through the area churches where whole families have completed the Bible Studies.
Action Plan: Continue with current activities
Timeline: Ongoing

Criterion #5
Weeks of Prayer and Baptismal Classes |
Currently, baptismal classes are held as students request them.
|
The school has at least two weeks of prayer each school
year. The school has baptismal classes planned for students both semesters of the school year. |
APCS Score=2
Progressing |
Reason for Score: APCS has a Week-of-Prayer each semester: Fall-Guest Speaker, Spring-MPA Students. The local
pastors come to the school to give baptismal studies to students who express an interest.
Action Plan: To become more intentional about encouraging students to commit to baptism by following up on the baptismal records of each student and encouraging those who have not been baptized and to arrange set times for the pastors to hold baptismal classes each semester and invite students to attend. The pastors could rotate through this system so that each of our constituent pastors would provide a class. This would give students the opportunity to sign up under the pastor that they are most comfortable with.

Criterion #6
Teachers Particiipate in Community Service Projects |
Teachers usually demonstrate Christ-like behavior with students, parents, colleagues, constituent members and others.
|
Teachers participate and assume leadership in community
service projects at least three times a year; and share faith and extend discipleship to students, parents, administration, colleagues, constituent members and others in the community. |
APCS Score=2
Progressing |
Reason for Score: Our teachers lead the students in a wide variety of community service opportunities. Most grades participate in visitations to the Pisgah Manor Nursing Home on a weekly basis. Mrs. Fuller takes her class Christmas caroling each year to the residents of the Pisgah Valley Retirement Community. APCS participates annually in the Pasta for Pennies drive to fight childhood leukemia. Other projects include Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, collections to help local community members with family aid, and providing the entire church service for area churches. Also, as a staff, we have studied the book Peacemakers, and we teach the Peacemakers curriculum in our classrooms. In dealing with disagreements with parents, students and constituents, we practice Peacemakers principles and apply the Matthew 18 guidelines for conflict resolution. In addition to these school activities, many of our staff and students personally assist with the Sonrise Community Kitchen which provides free breakfast to the homeless and hungry in the Asheville area.
Action Plan: We do feel that there needs to be improvement in the area of demonstrating Christ-like behavior to all members of our school community. We would like to work as a staff to become more supportive of one another and to work together as an effective team for the glory of God. We feel that, as sinful humans, we all fall short of Christ's example, but it is our greatest desire as a staff to serve Him as we interact with one another and with our school families.
